Dosage Schedule

  • 3 times daily for 1 week then reduced to 200mg twice daily
  • Initial Load: 150mg per 100mL infused over 10 minutes, followed by 1mg/min for 6 hours, followed by 0.5mg/min thereafter

  • Treatment of ventricular fibrillation
  • Prophylaxis of ventricular tachycardia
  • Correction of abnormal heart rhythms
  • Management of atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter

Pharmacological Actions

  • Delay in heart's electrical system recharge
  • Prolongation of electrical phase during heart's muscle cell stimulation
  • Slowing of electrical conduction through the heart
  • Reduction in rapidity of firing of the heart's pacemaker
  • Dilation of blood vessels

  • B blockers (Atenolol, Propranolol, Metoprolol)
  • Calcium channel blockers (Verapamil, Diltiazem)

Contraindications

  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Severe sinus-node dysfunction
  • Second- or third-degree atrioventricular block
  • Episode-induced syncope with bradycardia
  • Hypersensitivity to the drug or its components
