Indications
- Mild to moderately severe bacterial infections

Pharmacology
- Acid-stable
- Absorbed from the upper part of the small intestine
- Best absorbed in potassium salt form
- Convenient for treating Gram-positive infections
- Resistant to inactivation by gastric acid
Dosage
- Determined according to sensitivity of micro-organism
- Adjusted to clinical response
- Adult dosage: 250-500 mg 6 hourly
- Children dosage: 125-250 mg 6 hourly
- Infants dosage: 62.5-125 mg 6 hourly
- Best taken with empty stomach
Administration
- Best taken on an empty stomach
- Tablets swallowed without chewing
- Syrup shaken vigorously before use
Interaction
- Concurrent intake of food reduces rate of absorption
- Possible drug interactions with methotrexate, bacteriostatic antibiotics, probenecid, indomethacin, oral contraceptives, anticoagulants, aminoglycosides
- Interference with laboratory and diagnostic tests

- Hypersensitivity to penicillins or excipients
- Severe gastrointestinal disorders with vomiting and diarrhea

- Consider potassium content for patients with heart diseases or electrolyte disturbances
- Encephalopathy risk in case of overdose or renal impairment
- Proliferation of resistant microorganisms
- Check patient's condition at regular intervals
- Consider sugar content in diabetic patients
- No impairment of ability to drive or operate machinery
- Encephalopathy risk precluding machine operation or driving in case of adverse reactions
