Indications
- For the treatment of mild to moderately severe bacterial infections
- Infections of the ear, nose and throat regions
- Infections of the lower respiratory tract
- Infections due to beta-hemolytic streptococci of group A
- Skin infections
- Lymphadenitis and lymphangitis of bacterial origin
- Infections of the buccal cavity, gums or jaws
- Prophylaxis of scarlet fever
- Prophylaxis of infection after dental and oral surgical procedures
Pharmacology
- Phenoxymethyl penicillin is acid-stable
- Absorbed from the upper part of the small intestine
- Best absorbed when the potassium salt of Phenoxymethyl penicillin is used
- Convenient means of treating Gram-positive infections
- Resistant to inactivation by gastric acid
Dosage
- Dosage should be determined according to the sensitivity of the causative micro-organism and the severity of the infection
- Adult dosage: 250-500 mg 6 hourly
- Children dosage: varies based on age and weight
- Best taken with an empty stomach
Administration
- Best taken on an empty stomach, preferably one hour before meals
- Tablets are swallowed without chewing with sufficient amounts of liquid
- Before each use of the syrup, the bottle has to be shaken vigorously
Interaction
- Concurrent intake of food leads to a reduction in the rate of absorption
- Concomitant administration of penicillins may lead to increased levels of methotrexate in serum
- Diarrhoea may disturb the absorption of other orally administered drugs
- Concurrent administration of probenecid inhibits the renal excretion of penicillins
- Interference with laboratory and diagnostic tests may occur
Contraindications
- Must not be administered in patients with hypersensitivity to penicillins or any of the excipients
- Must not be used to treat patients with severe gastrointestinal disorders accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea

- Anaphylactic or anaphylactoid reactions
- Rashes or inflammation of mucous membranes
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Diarrhoea and enterocolitis
- Changes in blood picture
- Encephalopathy risk
- Transient discolouration of the teeth
- Proliferation of resistant microorganisms
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses the placenta
- Passes into the breast milk in small amounts
- May be used during pregnancy and lactation with appropriate indication
Precautions & Warnings
- Consider the possibility of cross-allergy between cephalosporins and penicillins
- Consider potassium content in patients with heart diseases or serious electrolyte disturbances
- Proliferation of resistant microorganisms with prolonged antibiotic administration
- Check the patient's condition at regular intervals
- Consider sugar content in patients with diabetes mellitus
- No impairment to drive or operate machinery
Overdose Effects
- Low toxicity with a broad therapeutic range
- Risk of encephalopathy in cases of administration of beta-lactam antibiotics
- No special measures other than discontinuation of the medication required
