Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by gram-positive bacteria
- Treatment of penicillinase-resistant staphylococcal infections
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections such as boils, abscesses, cellulitis, infected wounds, infected burns, skin graft protection, and various skin infections like ulcers, eczema, and acne
- Respiratory tract, nasal, ear, and throat infections including pneumonia, lung abscess, empyema, sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and otitis media
Dosage & Administration
- Adult oral dose: 500mg four times a day, Injection dosage varies based on site of administration such as intramuscular, intravenous, plural cavity, and joint cavity
- Pediatric oral dose: half of the adult dose for 2-10 years and one-fourth of the adult dose for under 2 years, Injection dosage varies based on site of administration with specific water for injection volumes
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to penicillins
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects similar to other penicillins such as fever, diarrhea, indigestion, and rash
- Discontinue use in case of any type of rash
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with a history of allergies to penicillins
- Do not use subconjunctival injections or eye drops
- Prepare and store oral solutions and drops in a cool place, use within 5-7 days at room temperature or refrigerated
- Injectable solutions remain effective for up to 24 hours at normal temperature
- Can be diluted with most liquids for oral administration, except acidic solutions
- Do not mix with meat-like liquids
