Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by gram-positive bacteria
  • Treatment of staphylococcal infections produced by penicillinase-producing strains

Dosage & Administration

  • Adults usual oral dose: 500mg four times daily before meals
  • Adults intramuscular injection: 250mg every four to six hours
  • Adults intravenous injection: 500mg every four to six hours
  • Children's oral dose: half of the adult dose for ages 2-10, one-quarter for under 2 years
  • Children's intramuscular injection: 250mg with 1.5ml or 500mg with 2ml water for injection
  • Children's intravenous injection: 500mg with 5-10ml water for injection
  • Children's oral suspension and drops should be freshly prepared and stored at a cool place
  • Prepared injectable solution for IM and IV administration should be used within 30 minutes
  • Injectable solution is effective for up to 24 hours at a natural temperature of 25°C

Contraindications

  • Patients hypersensitive to penicillin should not use cloxacillin

Side Effects

  • Similar to other penicillins, side effects include fever, diarrhea, indigestion, rashes, and urticaria

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution should be exercised when administering cloxacillin to patients with a history of allergies
  • Do not use as a subconjunctival injection or eye drops
  • Oral suspension and drops should be prepared and stored at a cool temperature, refrigeration if possible
  • Prepared injectable solutions for IM and IV administration should be used within 30 minutes
  • Oral suspension remains effective for up to 5 days at room temperature or 7 days if refrigerated
  • Intramuscularly or intravenously administered cloxacillin solution should be utilized within 24 hours
  • Most liquid forms of cloxacillin can be mixed with other liquids, but not with protein hydrolysates
