Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by gram-positive bacteria
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Respiratory tract, nasal, ear, and throat infections
  • Sensitive and other bacterial infections such as osteomyelitis, enteritis, endocarditis, urinary tract infections, and septicemia

Dosage & Administration

  • 500mg oral dose four times a day for adults
  • 250-500mg intramuscular injection every 4-6 hours for adults
  • 500mg intravenous injection for plural cavity and joint cavity infections
  • Oral dose varies for children based on age, and intramuscular or intravenous injection for children with varying doses and water for injection mixing ratios

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to penicillin

Side Effects

  • Mild and transient side effects similar to other penicillins including fever, diarrhea, indigestion, rash, hives, and erythematous reactions

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution advised in patients with history of allergy to penicillins
  • Avoid subconjunctival or ocular administration
  • Ensure preparation of syrup and drops in a cool place before use
  • Use prepared injections within 30 minutes for intramuscular or subcutaneous administration
  • Ensure liquid preparations of cloxacillin are used within 24 hours at normal temperature
  • Cloxacillin is soluble in most liquids but not with animal fats or some liquid proteins
