Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by gram-positive bacteria
- Skin and soft tissue infections such as boils, abscess, carbuncle, cellulitis, infected wounds, infected burns, and protection for skin grafts
- Respiratory tract, nasal, ear, and throat infections such as pneumonia, lung abscess, empyema, sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and otitis media
- Infections caused by penicillinase-producing staphylococci
- Sensitive bacteria-related infections like osteomyelitis, enteritis, endocarditis, urinary tract infection, and septicemia
Dosage & Administration
- For adults: 500mg orally four times a day, or as directed by a healthcare professional
- Intramuscular injection: 250-500mg every 4-6 hours as needed
- Intravenous injection: 500mg every 4-6 hours as needed, dosage may be doubled if necessary
- Intravenous injection for plural and joint cavities: 500mg once daily
- For children: half the adult dosage for ages 2-10 years, and one-fourth for under 2 years
- Intramuscular injection for children: 250mg with 1.5ml of water for injection or 500mg with 2ml of water for injection
- Intravenous injection for children: dosage based on weight and specific instructions
- Not recommended for subconjunctival or intraocular injections
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to penicillin
Side Effects
- Mild and transient reactions similar to other penicillins
- Common adverse effects include fever, diarrhea, indigestion, and rash
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with a history of penicillin allergy
- Avoid subconjunctival or intraocular administration
- Prepare and store the syrup and drops in a cool place, refrigeration if possible
- For intramuscular or intravenous administration, prepared solution must be used within 30 minutes
- Aqueous solutions of cloxacillin remain effective for up to 24 hours at room temperature (25°C)
- Compatible with most aqueous liquids but not with certain types of protein hydrolysates
