Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria
  • Treatment of infections caused by penicillinase-producing Staphylococci
  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections such as boils, abscess, cellulitis, infected wounds
  • Treatment of respiratory tract, nasal, ear, and throat infections such as pneumonia, sinusitis, tonsillitis
  • Treatment of sensitive and other bacterial infections such as osteomyelitis, enteritis, and septicemia

Dosage & Administration

  • Standard adult dosage: 500mg orally four times a day
  • Intramuscular injection dosage: 250mg every 4-6 hours
  • Subcutaneous injection dosage: 500mg every 4-6 hours, can be doubled if necessary
  • Intravenous injection dosage for plural cavity or joint cavity: 500mg once a day
  • Standard pediatric dosage: Half the adult dose for children aged 2-10 years, one-fourth for those under 2 years
  • Intramuscular injection dosage for children: 250mg with 1.5ml or 500mg with 2ml of sterile water for injection mixed

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to penicillin

Side Effects

  • Side effects similar to other penicillins, usually mild and transient
  • May include fever, diarrhea, indigestion, rash, and urticaria

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use with caution in patients with a history of allergy to penicillins
  • Oral solution and drops should be stored in a cool place and used within 5 days at room temperature or 7 days if refrigerated
  • Prepared injectable solutions should be used within 30 minutes of preparation
  • Injectable solutions remain effective at room temperature for up to 24 hours
  • Should not be mixed with protein hydrolysates or administered conjunctivally

  • All dosage forms of cloxacillin should be stored in a cool and dry place
