Indications
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of osteomyelitis and enteritis
- Prophylactic use during major surgical procedures
Pharmacology
- Active against Gram-positive organisms
- Little activity against Gram-negative bacilli
- Inhibits formation of bacterial cell wall
- Bactericidal antibiotic
Dosage
- Oral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily
- Dosage may be doubled in severe infections
- Parenteral administration for adults: 250 mg-1 g four times daily
- Intravenous injection over 3 to 4 minutes or by intravenous infusion
Administration
Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before a meal
Interaction
Concurrent use may result in increased levels of the medication in the blood
Contraindications
Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
- Rashes, urticaria, purpura
- Fever, interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, and cholestatic jaundice
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA Pregnancy Category B
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk, caution in lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with hepatic dysfunction
- Caution in the treatment of patients with an allergic diathesis
Use in Special Populations
Reduction in dose or extension of dose interval in severe renal failure
