Indications

  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
  • Treatment of respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of osteomyelitis, enteritis, endocarditis, urinary tract infection, meningitis, septicaemia
  • Prophylactic agent during major surgical procedures

Pharmacology

  • Active against Gram-positive organisms
  • Little activity against Gram-negative bacilli
  • Inhibition of bacterial cell wall formation
  • Resistance to hydrolysis by penicillinase
  • Bactericidal antibiotic
  • Mechanism of inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Steric hindrance induced by acyl side chain preventing the opening of the β-lactam ring

Dosage

  • Oral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily
  • Doubling of dosage in severe infections
  • Parenteral administration
  • Administration in children (2-10 years and under 2 years)

Administration

  • Oral doses administered 1 hour before meal

Interaction

  • Concurrent use may result in increased level of Auxil in blood

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients

  • Rashes, urticaria, purpura
  • Minor gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • US FDA Pregnancy Category B
  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Excretion in human milk
  • Caution advised during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients with hepatic dysfunction
  • Caution in patients with allergic diathesis

Use in Special Populations

  • Reduced dose or extended dose interval in severe renal failure
