Indications
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of osteomyelitis
- Treatment of endocarditis
- Treatment of urinary tract infection
- Prophylactic use during major surgical procedures
Pharmacology
- Active against Gram-positive organisms
- Little activity against Gram-negative bacilli
- Inhibits formation of bacterial cell wall
- Bactericidal antibiotic
- Interferes with peptidoglycan synthesis
- Resists action of bacterial penicillinase
Dosage
- Oral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily
- Oral administration for children (2-10 years): Half of adult dose
- Oral administration for children (Under 2 years): Quarter of adult dose
- Parenteral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily (Intramuscular or Intravenous)
- Parenteral administration for children: Half of adult dose (2-10 years), Quarter of adult dose (Under 2 years)
Administration
- Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before a meal
Interaction
- Concurrent use of Bdflox may result in increased levels of Bdflox in blood
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Common gastrointestinal side effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dyspepsia
- Other side effects: Rashes, urticaria, purpura, fever, interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA Pregnancy Category B
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk, caution in lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction
- Caution in the treatment of patients with an allergic diathesis
Use in Special Populations
- In severe renal failure, a reduction in dose or an extension of dose interval should be considered
