Indications

  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
  • Treatment of respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of osteomyelitis
  • Treatment of urinary tract infection
  • Prophylactic agent for major surgical procedures

Pharmacology

  • Active against Gram-positive organisms including penicillinase producing strains
  • Inhibits the formation of bacterial cell wall
  • Bactericidal antibiotic
  • Particularly useful against penicillinase-producing staphylococci

Dosage

  • Oral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily
  • Oral administration for children (2-10 years): Half of adult dose
  • Parenteral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily
  • Parenteral administration for children (2-10 years): Half of adult dose
  • Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before meal

  • Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before meal

Interaction

  • Concurrent use may result in increased level of Clox-F DS in blood for prolonged period

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients

Side Effects

  • Common side effects of gastrointestinal tract such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea
  • Rashes, urticaria, purpura
  • Fever, interstitial nephritis
  • Hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • US FDA Pregnancy Category B
  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Excreted in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use with caution in patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction
  • Caution should be exercised in the treatment of patients with an allergic diathesis

Use in Special Populations

  • In severe renal failure, a reduction in dose or an extension of dose interval should be considered

Reconstitution

  • Used in other routes in conjunction with systemic therapy
  • Administered in a dose of 250-500 mg daily by intraarticular injection
  • Administered by intrapleural injection in a dose of 250 mg daily
  • Dose of 125-250 mg dissolved in 3 ml of sterile water and inhaled by nebuliser four times daily
