Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by Gram-positive organisms
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of other infections like osteomyelitis and endocarditis
- Prophylactic use during major surgical procedures
Pharmacology
- Active against Gram-positive organisms including penicillinase producing strains
- Little activity against Gram-negative bacilli
- Inhibits the formation of cell wall of bacteria
- Bactericidal antibiotic particularly useful against penicillinase-producing staphylococci
- Resists the action of bacterial penicillinase
Dosage
- Oral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily, may be doubled in severe infections
- Oral administration for children: 1/2 of adult dose (2-10 years), 1/4 of adult dose (under 2 years)
- Parenteral administration for adults: 250 mg-1 g four times daily by slow injection or intravenous infusion, may be doubled in severe infections
- Parenteral administration for children: half of adult dose (2-10 years), a quarter of adult dose (under 2 years)
Administration
Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before a meal
Interaction
Concurrent use may result in increased levels of E-Flu in blood for a prolonged period
Contraindications
Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dyspepsia
- Rashes, urticaria, purpura, fever, interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA Pregnancy Category B
- Caution in use during pregnancy if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk, caution in use by lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction
- Caution in the treatment of patients with an allergic diathesis
Use in Special Populations
In severe renal failure, a reduction in dose or an extension of dose interval should be considered
