Indications
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of osteomyelitis
- Treatment of enteritis
- Prophylactic agent for surgical procedures
Pharmacology
- Active against Gram-positive organisms
- Little activity against Gram-negative bacilli
- Inhibits the formation of bacterial cell wall
- Bactericidal antibiotic
- Useful against penicillinase-producing staphylococci
Dosage
- Oral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily
- Oral administration for children (2-10 years): 1/2 of adult dose
- Intramuscular Injection: 250 mg four times daily for adults
- Intravenous Injection: 250 mg-1 g four times daily for adults
Administration
Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before a meal
Interaction
Concurrent use may result in increased level of Faxilin in blood
Contraindications
Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances
- Rashes, urticaria, purpura, fever, hepatitis reported
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA Pregnancy Category: B
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a lactating mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with hepatic dysfunction
- Caution in the treatment of patients with an allergic diathesis
Use in Special Populations
In severe renal failure, a reduction in dose should be considered
