Indications
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of osteomyelitis
- Treatment of urinary tract infections
- Prophylactic agent for surgical procedures
Pharmacology
- Active against Gram-positive organisms
- Little activity against Gram-negative bacilli
- Inhibits formation of bacterial cell wall
- Bactericidal antibiotic
- Interferes with peptidoglycan synthesis
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250 mg four times daily
- Children dosage: 1/2 of adult dose (2-10 years)
- Parenteral administration dosage: 250 mg-1 g four times daily
- Intramuscular and intravenous injection dosage
Administration
- Oral doses administered 1 hour before meal
Interaction
- Concurrent use may increase levels in blood
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Common side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
