Indications

  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
  • Treatment of respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of osteomyelitis, enteritis, endocarditis, urinary tract infection, meningitis, septicaemia
  • Prophylactic use during major surgical procedures

Pharmacology

  • Active against Gram-positive organisms
  • Little activity against Gram-negative bacilli
  • Inhibits cell wall formation
  • Bactericidal antibiotic
  • Kills bacterial cell wall
  • Interferes with peptidoglycan synthesis

Dosage

  • Oral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily
  • Oral administration for children (2-10 years): half of adult dose
  • Oral administration for children (under 2 years): quarter of adult dose
  • Parenteral administration for adults: 250 mg-1 g four times daily
  • Parenteral administration for children: half of adult dose

Administration

Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before meal

Interaction

Concurrent use with certain medications may increase blood levels of Flucloxi

Contraindications

Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dyspepsia
  • Skin reactions: rashes, urticaria, purpura
  • Systemic effects: fever, interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • US FDA Pregnancy Category B
  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Excreted in human milk
  • Caution when administered to lactating mother

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use with caution in patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction
  • Exercise caution in patients with allergic diathesis

Use in Special Populations

In severe renal failure, consider dose reduction or extension of dose interval

  • Used in other routes in conjunction with systemic therapy
  • Administered by intraarticular and intrapleural injection
