Indications

Pharmacology
- Active against Gram-positive organisms
- Little activity against Gram-negative bacilli
- Inhibits the formation of bacteria cell wall
- Bactericidal antibiotic
- Useful against penicillinase-producing staphylococci
- Inhibits peptidoglycan synthesis
- Resists the action of bacterial penicillinase
Dosage
- Adult oral dosage: 250 mg four times daily
- Children (2-10 years) oral dosage: half of adult dose
- Children (Under 2 years) oral dosage: a quarter of adult dose
- Adult intramuscular injection: 250 mg four times daily
- Adult intravenous injection: 250 mg-1 g four times daily
- Doubling of systemic doses in severe infections
Administration
Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before a meal
Interaction
Concurrent use may result in increased levels of Flumed in the blood for a prolonged period
Contraindications
Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Common gastrointestinal side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dyspepsia
- Other side effects: rashes, urticaria, purpura, fever, interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA Pregnancy Category: B
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk, caution in lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction
- Caution in the treatment of patients with an allergic diathesis
Use in Special Populations
In severe renal failure, a reduction in dose or an extension of dose interval should be considered
