Indications
- Treatment of aphthous ulcers
Pharmacology
- Accelerates healing of aphthous ulcers
- Potent inhibitor of inflammatory mediators
- Anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory activities
- Systemic absorption via gastrointestinal tract
Dosage & Administration
- Apply paste four times daily
- Dry the ulcer(s) before application
- Wash hands before and after applying
- Moisten the tip of the index finger before application
- Use until the ulcer heals
- Wash eyes promptly if contact occurs
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Amlexanox or other ingredients
Side Effects
- Transient pain, stinging, or burning at the site of application
- Contact mucositis, nausea, and diarrhea (infrequent)
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category B
- No adverse fetal effects observed in animal studies
- Caution during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Wash hands after application
- Discontinue use if rash or contact mucositis occurs
Use in Special Populations
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients not established
Overdose Effects
- Systemic exposure well below maximum nontoxic dose
- Gastrointestinal upset from ingestion of full tube
