Indications
- Treatment of infections due to Gram-positive organisms
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Respiratory tract infections
- Osteomyelitis treatment
- Urinary tract infection treatment
- Prophylactic use during major surgical procedures
Pharmacology
- Active against Gram-positive organisms
- Little activity against Gram-negative bacilli
- Inhibition of cell wall formation
- Bactericidal antibiotic
- Mechanism of action - interference with peptidoglycan synthesis
Dosage
- Adult oral dosage: 250 mg four times daily
- Up to 8 gm daily in severe infections
- Intramuscular and intravenous injection dosage
- Children's dosage based on age
- Oral doses to be administered 1 hour before meal
Administration
- Oral administration 1 hour before meal
Interaction
- Concurrent use may result in increased blood levels
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Common side effects - gastrointestinal disturbances
- Rashes, urticaria, purpura
- Intermittent nephritis, hepatitis, jaundice
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk, caution during lactation

- Caution in patients with hepatic dysfunction
- Caution in patients with allergic diathesis
