Indications
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of osteomyelitis
- Treatment of enteritis
- Prophylactic use during surgical procedures
Pharmacology
- Active against Gram-positive organisms including penicillinase producing strains
- Little activity against Gram-negative bacilli
- Inhibits formation of bacterial cell wall
- Bactericidal antibiotic
- Kills bacterial cell wall by interfering with peptidoglycan synthesis
Dosage
- Oral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily
- Maximum 8 gm daily for severe infections
- Intramuscular and intravenous administration for adults and children
- Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before meal
Mode of Action
- Inhibits the formation of cell wall of bacteria
- Has little activity against Gram-negative bacilli
- Resists the action of bacterial penicillinase
Interaction
- Concurrent use may result in increased level of Fucil in blood for prolonged period
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Common side effects of gastrointestinal tract such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Rashes, urticaria, purpura, fever, interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA Pregnancy Category B
- Excreted in human milk
- Caution should be exercised when administered to lactating mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction
- Caution should be exercised in the treatment of patients with an allergic diathesis
Use in Special Populations
- In severe renal failure, reduction in dose or extension of dose interval should be considered

- Used in other routes in conjunction with systemic therapy
- Administered by intraarticular and intrapleural injection
- Inhaled by nebulizer four times daily
