Indications
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of osteomyelitis
- Treatment of urinary tract infection
- Prophylactic use during major surgical procedures
Pharmacology
- Active against Gram-positive organisms
- Little activity against Gram-negative bacilli
- Inhibits formation of bacteria cell wall
- Bactericidal antibiotic
- Resists action of bacterial penicillinase
Dosage
- Oral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily
- Oral administration for children: 1/2 of adult dose (2-10 years)
- Intramuscular injection for adults: 250 mg four times daily
- Intravenous injection for adults: 250 mg-1g four times daily
- All systemic doses may be doubled in severe infections
Administration
- Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before meal
Interaction
- Concurrent use with certain medications may increase blood levels for prolonged period
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Common side effects of gastrointestinal tract such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Rashes, urticaria, purpura
- Fever, interstitial nephritis
- Hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA Pregnancy Category B
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk, caution during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with hepatic dysfunction
- Caution in treatment of patients with allergic diathesis
Use in Special Populations
- Reduction in dose or dose interval in severe renal failure
