Indications
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of other infections like osteomyelitis, enteritis, endocarditis
- Prophylactic use during major surgical procedures
Pharmacology
- Active against Gram-positive organisms
- Little activity against Gram-negative bacilli
- Inhibits the formation of bacterial cell wall
- Resistance to hydrolysis by penicillinase
- Bactericidal antibiotic
- Inhibits transpeptidase enzyme
Dosage
- Oral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily
- Increased dosage for severe infections
- Intramuscular and intravenous administration
- Dosage adjustments for children
Administration
- Oral doses to be administered 1 hour before a meal
Interaction
- Concurrent use may increase Phylopen levels in blood
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Rashes, urticaria, purpura
- Interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice
