Indications

  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
  • Treatment of respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of osteomyelitis
  • Treatment of enteritis
  • Prophylactic use during major surgical procedures

Pharmacology

  • Active against Gram-positive organisms
  • Inhibition of bacterial cell wall formation
  • Bactericidal antibiotic
  • Useful against penicillinase-producing staphylococci
  • Interference with peptidoglycan synthesis

Dosage

  • Oral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily
  • Oral administration for severe infections: dosage may be doubled
  • Parenteral administration for adults: 250 mg-1 g four times daily
  • Parenteral administration for severe infections: all systemic doses may be doubled
  • Children's dosage: 1/2 of adult dose (2-10 years), 1/4 of adult dose (under 2 years)

Administration

Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before meal

Interaction

Concurrent use may result in increased level of S-Fluclox in blood for prolonged period

Contraindications

Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients

Side Effects

  • Common side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dyspepsia
  • Other side effects: rashes, urticaria, purpura, fever, interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • US FDA Pregnancy Category B
  • Caution in use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Excreted in human milk, caution in administration to lactating mother

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use with caution in patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction
  • Caution in treatment of patients with an allergic diathesis

Use in Special Populations

In severe renal failure, consider a reduction in dose or an extension of dose interval
