Indications

  • Treatment of infections in Genitourinary Tract
  • Infections in Respiratory Tract
  • Infections in Gastrointestinal Tract
  • Meningitis

Pharmacology

Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins

Dosage

  • Intra-articular dosage for Adults and Children
  • Intraperitoneal dosage for Adults and Children
  • Intrapleural dosage for Adults and Children
  • Intravenous dosage for Meningitis and Intrapartum prophylaxis
  • Oral dosage for various infections
  • Parenteral dosage for Susceptible infections and Septicaemia

Administration

Should be taken on an empty stomach

Interaction

  • May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives
  • May alter INR with warfarin and phenindione
  • May reduce efficacy of oral typhoid vaccines
  • May reduce excretion of methotrexate
  • Reduced absorption with chloroquine
  • May interfere with bactericidal action of ampicillin

Hypersensitivity to ampicillin and other penicillins

Precautions & Warnings

Patient with history of β-lactam allergy, renal impairment, pregnancy, and lactation

Use in Special Populations

Dose reduction or increase in dose interval for patients with renal impairment

Overdose Effects

  • Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea
  • Management: Symptomatic and supportive treatment, may be removed by haemodialysis

  • Intramuscular reconstitution
  • Intravenous reconstitution
  • Intra-articular reconstitution
  • Intraperitoneal reconstitution
  • Intrapleural reconstitution

Storage Conditions

Store between 20-25°C, reconstituted oral suspension to be stored between 2-8°C and discarded after 14 days
