Pharmacology

Broad spectrum penicillin
Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
Inhibits biosynthesis of cell wall
Stable in gastric acid
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids

Dosage

Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily
Increase to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections
Children dosage: 125 mg three times daily
Increase to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections
Specific dosage recommendations for various infections

Administration

Can be administered by adding to milk, fruit juice, water
Reconstituted suspension should be taken immediately

Interaction

Concurrent use with Probenecid may increase and prolong blood levels
May affect gut flora and estrogen reabsorption

Contraindications

Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients

Side Effects

Mild and transient side effects
May include diarrhea, indigestion, rash
Rare reports of pseudo-membranous colitis
