Indications

  • Treatment of ear, nose, and throat infections

  • Indicated in combination therapy for H. pylori infection

Pharmacology

  • Effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall
  • Stable in the presence of gastric acid
  • Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
  • Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids

Dosage

  • Adult dosage of 250 mg - 500 mg three times daily
  • Children dosage of 125 mg - 250 mg three times daily
  • Recommended dosage for severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection
  • Recommended dosage for otitis media and pneumonia
  • Recommended dosage for dental abscess and urinary tract infections
  • Single dose for gonorrhea

Administration

  • Can be administered by mixing with milk, fruit juice, or water

Interaction

  • Concurrent use with Probenecid may increase and prolong blood levels
  • May affect gut flora and estrogen reabsorption

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients

Side Effects

  • Mild and transient effects such as diarrhea, indigestion, and rash
  • Rare reports of pseudo-membranous colitis

  • Caution advised during lactation
