Indications
- Essential hypertension

Pharmacology
- Calcium-channel blocker

Dosage & Administration
- Usual dose 5 mg once daily for hypertension
- Maximum dose 10 mg once daily for hypertension
- 5 to 10 mg dose for angina pectoris
- May be taken without regard to meals
Interaction
- Potentially hazardous interactions with p-blockers in patients with impaired cardiac left ventricular function
- No interaction between Amlopin and Digoxin
- No interaction between Amlopin and Cimetidine
- No significant alteration of Warfarin effect by Amlopin
- Food does not alter absorption of Amlopin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to dihydropyridine derivatives
- Pregnancy

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Use during pregnancy only if benefit justifies potential risk to fetus
- Recommendation to discontinue nursing while Amlodipine is administered
Precautions & Warnings
- Precaution in patients with hepatic impairment
- Precaution during pregnancy and breastfeeding
Use in Special Populations
- Specific dosing for children with hypertension from 6 to 17 years of age
- Effect on blood pressure in children under 6 years not known
- Normal dosage regimens recommended for elderly and patients with renal impairment
- Caution and lower starting dose for patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment
- No established dosage recommendations for severe hepatic impairment
Overdose Effects
- Excessive peripheral vasodilatation
- Reflex tachycardia
- Marked and probably prolonged systemic hypotension
- Active cardiovascular support required
- Gastric lavage may be worthwhile
- Intravenous calcium gluconate may be beneficial
