Description
- AMX is a broad-spectrum penicillin used to treat various bacterial infections in different parts of the body.
Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including ear, nose and throat infections, lower respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, genito-urinary tract infections, venereal disease, dental abscess, H. pylori infection, and duodenal ulcer disease
Pharmacology
- Acts through the inhibition of cell wall biosynthesis
- Stable in the presence of gastric acid
- Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
- Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250-500 mg three times daily
- Children dosage: 125-250 mg three times daily
- Specific dosage for severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhoea
- Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
Administration
- Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding it to milk, fruit juice, or water
Interaction
- Concurrent use with Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of AMX
- May affect gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral contraceptives
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side effects
- Mild and transient side effects include diarrhea, indigestion, and occasionally rash
- Rare reports of pseudo-membranous colitis
Pregnancy lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category: B
- Caution in lactating mothers due to excretion in human milk
Precautions warnings
- Possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens
- Discontinue and institute appropriate therapy if superinfections occur
