Description

Indications
- Ear, nose and throat infections
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Genito-urinary tract infections
- Venereal disease
- Dental abscess
- Triple therapy for H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease
- Reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence
Pharmacology
- Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum penicillin
- Inhibition of cell wall biosynthesis
- Stable in the presence of gastric acid
- Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250mg three times daily, can be increased for severe infections
- Children's dosage: 125mg three times daily, can be increased for severe infections
- Special recommended doses for severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhoea
- Adjust dosage in renal impairment
Administration
- Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding to milk, fruit juice, or water
- Administer reconstituted suspension immediately after preparation
Interaction
- Concurrent use with Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of Antif
- May affect gut flora and reduce efficacy of combined oral estrogen/progesterone contraceptives
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects such as diarrhea, indigestion, and rash
- Rare reports of pseudo-membranous colitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category B
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a lactating mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Consider possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens during therapy
- Discontinue and institute appropriate therapy if superinfections occur
