Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum penicillin
  • Inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall
  • Stable in the presence of gastric acid
  • Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
  • Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids

Dosage

  • Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily, increasing up to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections
  • Children dosage (up to 10 years of age): 125 mg three times daily, increasing up to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections
  • Specific dosage for purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, gonorrhea, renal impairment

Administration

  • Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding to milk, fruit juice, water

Interaction

  • Concurrent use with Probenecid may increase and prolong blood levels
  • May affect gut flora and reduce efficacy of combined oral contraceptives

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients

Side Effects

  • Mild and transient side effects including diarrhea, indigestion, rash
  • Rarely reported pseudo-membranous colitis

  • Caution advised during lactation

  • Watch for superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens
