Indications

Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum penicillin
- Inhibition of cell wall biosynthesis
- Stable in gastric acid
- Rapid oral absorption
- Widely distributed in body tissues
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily
- Severe adult infections: up to 500 mg three times daily
- Children dosage: 125 mg three times daily
- Severe respiratory infection dosage: 3 gm every 12 hours
- Otitis media dosage: 1 g three times daily for adult
- Pneumonia dosage: 500-1000 mg three times daily
Administration
Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding to milk, fruit juice, or water
Interaction
- Concurrent use with Probenecid increases and prolongs blood levels
- May affect gut flora and reduce oral contraceptive efficacy
Contraindications
Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects
- May include diarrhea, indigestion, rash
- Rarely reported: pseudo-membranous colitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category B
- Excreted in human milk
- Caution during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
Possibility of superinfections should be kept in mind, appropriate therapy should be instituted if superinfections occur
