Indications
- Treatment of infections in ear, nose, and throat
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of genito-urinary tract infections
- Treatment of venereal diseases
- Short-term therapy for dental abscess
Pharmacology
- Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum penicillin
- Effective against a wide range of bacteria
- Acts through the inhibition of cell wall biosynthesis
- Stable in gastric acid
- Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily
- Severe adult dosage: up to 500 mg three times daily
- Children dosage: 125 mg three times daily
- Severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection dosage: 3 gm every 12 hours
- Otitis media dosage: 1 g three times daily for adults
- Pneumonia dosage: 500-1000 mg three times daily
- Dental abscess dosage: 3 gm, repeated after 10-12 hours
- Urinary tract infections dosage: 3 gm, repeated after 10-12 hours
Administration
- Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding to milk, fruit juice, or water
- Suspension should be taken immediately after preparation
Interaction
- Concurrent use with probenecid may increase and prolong blood levels
- May affect gut flora leading to lower estrogen reabsorption
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects
- May include diarrhea, indigestion, rash
- Rare cases of pseudo-membranous colitis reported

Precautions & Warnings
- Watch for superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens
- Discontinue if superinfections occur
