Pharmacology
Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum penicillin effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It acts through the inhibition of biosynthesis of the bacterial cell wall and is rapidly absorbed after oral administration.
Interaction
Concurrent use of Aristomox and Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of Aristomox. It may also affect the gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral estrogen/progesterone contraceptives.
Contraindications
Aristomox is contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients.
SideEffects
- Mild and transient side effects including diarrhea, indigestion, and occasionally rash. Pseudo-membranous colitis has been rarely reported.
PregnancyAndLactation
US FDA pregnancy category of Amoxicillin is B. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excretion in human milk suggests caution when administered to a lactating mother.
PrecautionsAndWarnings
The possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be kept in mind during therapy. If superinfections occur, Aristomox should be discontinued and appropriate therapy should be instituted.
