Indications

  • Treatment of susceptible ß-lactamase negative strains of microorganisms
  • Ear, nose and throat infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Genito-urinary tract infections
  • Venereal disease (acute uncomplicated gonorrhoea)
  • Dental abscess treatment
  • H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease treatment

Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum penicillin
  • Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Inhibits biosynthesis of cell wall
  • Stable in the presence of gastric acid
  • Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
  • Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids

Dosage

  • Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily, increasing to 500 mg for severe infections
  • Children's dosage: 125 mg three times daily, increasing to 250 mg for severe infections
  • Specific dosage recommendations for different infections

Administration

  • Reconstituted suspension can be administered with milk, fruit juice, or water

Interaction

  • Concurrent use with Probenecid may increase and prolong blood levels
  • May affect gut flora and reduce estrogen reabsorption

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients

Side Effects

  • Mild and transient side effects
  • Possible effects include diarrhoea, indigestion, rash
  • Rare reports of pseudo-membranous colitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • US FDA pregnancy category B
  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Excreted in human milk
  • Caution advised during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens
  • Appropriate therapy should be instituted if superinfections occur
