Indications
- Treatment of susceptible bacteria infections
- Ear, nose, and throat infections
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Genitourinary tract infections

Pharmacology
Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It inhibits cell wall biosynthesis and is rapidly absorbed after oral administration.
Dosage
- Adult: 250 mg three times daily, up to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections
- Children: 125 mg three times daily, up to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections
- Other Dosage Recommendations:
- Severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection: 3 gm every 12 hours
- Otitis media: 1 g three times daily for adults, 40 mg/kg body weight daily in 3 divided doses for children
- Pneumonia: 500-1000 mg three times daily
- Dental abscess: 3 gm, repeated after 10-12 hours
- Urinary tract infections: 3 gm, repeated after 10-12 hours
- Gonorrhea: Single dose of 2-3 gm with Probenecid 1 gm
- In renal impairment: dosage adjustment may be necessary
Administration
Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding to milk, fruit juice, or water, and should be taken immediately.
Interaction
Concurrent use of Bactamox and Probenecid may increase and prolong blood levels of Bactamox. It may also affect gut flora and reduce estrogen reabsorption and efficacy of combined oral contraceptives.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in penicillin-hypersensitive patients.
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects
- May include diarrhea, indigestion, or rash
- Rare reports of pseudo-membranous colitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
US FDA pregnancy category B. Caution should be exercised during lactation.
Precautions & Warnings
Keep in mind the possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens during therapy. Discontinue Bactamox if superinfections occur and institute appropriate therapy.

Amoxicillin 500 mg Injection: Intramuscular: Add 2.5 ml water for injection. Intravenous: Dissolve in 10 ml water for injection.
