Pharmacology

Broad spectrum penicillin, effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, inhibits biosynthesis of cell wall, stable in gastric acid, rapidly absorbed after oral administration, widely distributed in body tissues and fluids

Dosage

Adult: 250 mg three times daily, increasing up to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections. Children (up to 10 years of age): 125 mg three times daily, increasing up to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections. Also, specific dosages for severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, gonorrhoea, and in renal impairment

Administration

Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding the required amount of suspension to milk, fruit juice, water, to be taken immediately

Interaction

Concurrent use of Cemoxin and Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of Cemoxin. It may also affect gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral estrogen/progesterone contraceptives

Contraindications

Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients

Side Effects

Mild and transient side effects including diarrhoea, indigestion, occasionally rash, and rarely pseudo-membranous colitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

FDA pregnancy category B. Caution advised during pregnancy and lactation due to excretion in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

Keep in mind the possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens during therapy
