Pharmacology
Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, acts through the inhibition of cell wall biosynthesis, stable in the presence of gastric acid, and rapidly absorbed after oral administration
Dosage
- Adult dosage of 250 mg three times daily, increasing to 500 mg for severe infections
- Children dosage of 125 mg three times daily, increasing to 250 mg for severe infections
Administration
Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding to milk, fruit juice, water, etc.
Interaction
Concurrent use of Amoxicillin and Probenecid may result in increased blood levels, affect gut flora and contraceptive efficacy
Contraindications
Amoxicillin is contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
May include diarrhea, indigestion, rash, and rarely pseudo-membranous colitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy category B, caution advised during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
Possible superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be kept in mind during therapy
