Indications

  • Treatment of ear, nose and throat infections
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
  • Treatment of genito-urinary tract infections
  • Treatment of venereal diseases
  • Treatment of dental abscess
  • Triple therapy for H. pylori infection

Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum penicillin
  • Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall
  • Stable in the presence of gastric acid
  • Rapid absorption after oral administration
  • Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids

Dosage

  • Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily
  • Adult dosage for severe infections: 500 mg three times daily
  • Children dosage: 125 mg three times daily
  • Children dosage for severe infections: 250 mg three times daily
  • Recommended dosage for severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection: 3 gm every 12 hours
  • Recommended dosage for otitis media: 1 g three times daily for adults
  • Recommended dosage for pneumonia: 500-1000 mg three times daily
  • Recommended dosage for dental abscess: 3 gm repeated after 10-12 hours
  • Recommended dosage for urinary tract infections: 3 gm repeated after 10-12 hours
  • Recommended dosage for gonorrhoea: Single dose of 2-3 gm with Probenecid 1 gm

Administration

Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding the required amount of suspension to milk, fruit juice, or water, and then taken immediately

Interaction

  • Concurrent use of Fimoxyl and Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of Fimoxyl
  • Fimoxyl may affect gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral estrogen/progesterone contraceptives

Contraindications

Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients

Side Effects

  • Mild and transient side effects
  • May include diarrhea, indigestion, or occasionally rash
  • Rarely reported cases of pseudo-membranous colitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

US FDA pregnancy category of Amoxicillin is B. Caution should be exercised when administered to a lactating mother.

Precautions & Warnings

Superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be kept in mind during therapy

Reconstitution

  • Intramuscular reconstitution: Add 2.5 ml water for injection to Amoxycillin 500 mg injection vial
  • Intravenous reconstitution: Dissolve Amoxycillin 500 mg injection in 10 ml water for injection
