Indications

  • Treatment of infections due to susceptible β-lactamase negative strains of microorganisms
  • Ear, nose and throat infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Genito-urinary tract infections
  • Venereal disease
  • Dental abscess
  • H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease

Pharmacology

  • Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum penicillin
  • Effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall
  • Stable in the presence of gastric acid
  • Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
  • Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids

Dosage

  • Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily, increasing to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections
  • Children dosage (up to 10 years of age): 125 mg three times daily, increasing to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections

Administration

  • Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding the required amount of suspension to milk, fruit juice, water

Interaction

  • Concurrent use of Genamox and Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of Genamox
  • Genamox may affect the gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral estrogen/progesterone contraceptives

Contraindications

  • Amoxicillin is contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients

Side Effects

  • Mild and transient side effects such as diarrhea, indigestion, occasionally rash
  • Rarely reported pseudo-membranous colitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • US FDA pregnancy category of Amoxicillin is B
  • Caution should be exercised when Amoxicillin is administered to a lactating mother

Precautions & Warnings

  • Keep in mind the possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens during therapy. If superinfections occur, Genamox should be discontinued and appropriate therapy should be instituted
