Description
Genamox is a broad spectrum penicillin indicated in the treatment of infections due to susceptible ß-lactamase negative strains of microorganisms. It is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and is stable in the presence of gastric acid.
Indications
- Ear, nose and throat infections
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Genito-urinary tract infections
- Venereal disease
- Dental abscess
- H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease
Pharmacology
Amoxicillin acts through the inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall and is rapidly absorbed after oral administration, reaching peak plasma concentration within 1 to 2 hours.
Dosage
- Adult: 250 mg three times daily, increasing up to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections
- Children: 125 mg three times daily, increasing up to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections
- Special Cases:
- Severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection
- Otitis media
- Pneumonia
- Dental abscess
- Urinary tract infections
- Gonorrhoea
- Renal impairment
Administration
Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding the required amount of suspension to milk, fruit juice, or water and should then be taken immediately.
Interaction
- Concurrent use of Genamox and Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of Genamox
- May affect the gut flora leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral estrogen/progesterone contraceptives
Contraindications
- Penicillin hypersensitive patients

- Diarrhoea
- Indigestion
- Rash
- Pseudo-membranous colitis reported rarely
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category B
- Caution should be exercised when administered to lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
The possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be kept in mind during therapy
