Indications

Pharmacology

Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin effective against a wide range of bacteria. It inhibits the biosynthesis of cell walls, is stable in the presence of gastric acid, and is rapidly absorbed after oral administration.

Dosage

  • Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily, increasing up to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections
  • Children dosage: 125 mg three times daily, increasing up to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections
  • Recommended doses for specific infections such as severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhea
  • Reduced dosage in renal impairment

Administration

Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding it to milk, fruit juice, or water, and should be taken immediately.

Interaction

  • Concurrent use with Probenecid may increase and prolong blood levels of Amoxicillin
  • May affect gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption

Contraindications

Amoxicillin is contraindicated in penicillin-hypersensitive patients
