Indications
- Ear, nose and throat infections

Pharmacology
Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum penicillin effective against a wide range of bacteria, inhibits cell wall biosynthesis, and is stable in gastric acid.
Dosage
- Adult: 250 mg three times daily, increasing to 500 mg for severe infections
- Children: 125 mg three times daily, increasing to 250 mg for severe infections
- Special Cases:
- Severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection: 3 gm every 12 hours
- Otitis media: 1 g three times daily for adults, 40 mg/kg daily in 3 divided doses for children (max. 3 g daily)
Administration
Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding it to milk, fruit juice, or water and should then be taken immediately.
Interaction
- Concurrent use of Hectamox DS and Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels
- May affect gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption
Contraindications
Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Mild and transient
- May include diarrhea, indigestion, rash
- Rarely: pseudo-membranous colitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
US FDA pregnancy category B, excreted in human milk, caution required during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
Possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be kept in mind

- Amoxycillin 500 mg Injection:
- Intramuscular: Add 2.5 ml water for injection to Amoxycillin 500 mg injection vial
- Intravenous: Dissolve in 10 ml water for injection
