Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum penicillin
- Inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall
- Stable in the presence of gastric acid
- Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
- Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily, increasing to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections
- Children's dosage: 125 mg three times daily, increasing to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections
Administration
- Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding it to milk, fruit juice, or water
Interaction
- Concurrent use with Probenecid may increase and prolong blood levels of Hectamox
- Can affect gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral contraceptives
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects including diarrhea, indigestion, occasionally rash
- Rare cases of Pseudo-membranous colitis have been reported

- Caution advised during lactation due to excretion in human milk

- Possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be kept in mind during therapy
