Indications
- Treatment of infections due to susceptible β-lactamase negative strains of microorganisms
- Ear, nose and throat infections
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Genito-urinary tract infections
- Venereal disease
- Dental abscess therapy
- Combination therapy for H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease
Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Inhibition of cell wall biosynthesis
- Stable in the presence of gastric acid
- Rapid oral absorption
- Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily, up to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections
- Children dosage: 125 mg three times daily, up to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections
- Specific dosages for severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhoea
Administration
- Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding to milk, fruit juice, or water
Interaction
- Concurrent use with Probenecid may increase and prolong blood levels
- May affect gut flora and estrogen reabsorption, reducing efficacy of combined oral contraceptives
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects may include diarrhoea, indigestion, or rash
- Rare reports of pseudo-membranous colitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution advised during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Risk of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens
- Discontinue if superinfections occur
