Medicine Details

Indications

  • Treatment of infections due to susceptible ß-lactamase negative strains of microorganisms
  • Ear, nose, and throat infections (i.e. otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis)
  • Lower respiratory tract infections (i.e. pneumonia, acute and chronic bronchitis, lung abscess, empyema, bronchiectasis)
  • Skin and soft tissue infections (i.e. cellulitis, carbuncles, furunculosis, infected wounds, abscess)
  • Genitourinary tract infections (i.e. pyelonephritis, cystitis, and urethritis)
  • Venereal disease (i.e. acute uncomplicated gonorrhea)
  • Use in dental abscess as short-term therapy
  • Combination therapy for H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease
  • Reduction of the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence

Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum penicillin
  • Effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall
  • Stable in the presence of gastric acid
  • Rapid absorption after oral administration
  • Widely distributed at varying concentrations in body tissues and fluids

Dosage

  • Adult dose: 250 mg three times daily (increasing up to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections)
  • Children's dose (up to 10 years of age): 125 mg three times daily (increasing up to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections)
  • Specific doses for severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhea
  • Dose adjustments in renal impairment

Administration

  • Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding it to milk, fruit juice, or water
  • Immediate consumption after preparation

Interaction

  • Concurrent use with Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels
  • May affect gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral contraceptives

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients

Side Effects

  • Mild and transient nature
  • May include diarrhea, indigestion, or occasional rash
  • Rare reports of pseudo-membranous colitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • US FDA pregnancy category of B
  • Caution should be exercised when administered to a lactating mother

Precautions & Warnings

  • Possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens
  • Need for discontinuation and appropriate therapy if superinfections occur
