Dosage

  • Adult dosage: 250 mg - 500 mg three times daily
  • Children dosage: 125 mg - 250 mg three times daily, based on age and severity of infection
  • Specific recommended doses for severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhea
  • Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
  • Intramuscular and intravenous reconstitution instructions

Administration

  • Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding to milk, fruit juice, or water

Mode of Action

  • Inhibition of cell wall biosynthesis

Interaction

  • Concurrent use with Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of Monamox
  • May affect gut flora leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral contraceptives

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to penicillin

Side Effects

  • Mild and transient side effects - diarrhea, indigestion, rash
  • Rare reports of pseudo-membranous colitis

  • Caution required during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens
  • Discontinue if superinfections occur and institute appropriate therapy
