Description
Monamox is a broad-spectrum penicillin effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Indications
- Ear, nose, and throat infections
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Genito-urinary tract infections
- Venereal disease
- Dental abscess
- H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease
Pharmacology
- Mode of Action: Inhibition of cell wall biosynthesis
- Absorption: Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
- Distribution: Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids
Dosage
- Adult:
- 250 mg three times daily
- 500 mg three times daily for severe infections
- Children:
- 125 mg three times daily
- 250 mg three times daily for severe infections
- Other Recommendations:
- 3 gm every 12 hours for severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection
- 1 g three times daily for adult and 40 mg/kg body weight daily in 3 divided doses for otitis media
- 500-1000 mg three times daily for pneumonia
- 3 gm for dental abscess, urinary tract infections, and in renal impairment
Administration
Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding the required amount of suspension to milk, fruit juice, or water.
Interaction
Concurrent use of Monamox and Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of Monamox. Monamox may affect the gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral estrogen/progesterone contraceptives.
Contraindications
Amoxicillin is contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients.
Side Effects
Mild and transient side effects, including diarrhea, indigestion, rash, and rarely, pseudo-membranous colitis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
US FDA pregnancy category of Amoxicillin is B. Caution should be exercised when administered to a lactating mother.
Precautions & Warnings
The possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be kept in mind during therapy. If superinfections occur, Monamox should be discontinued, and appropriate therapy should be instituted.
