Indications
- Treatment of ear, nose, and throat infections
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology
- Amoxicillin as a broad spectrum penicillin
- Effective against a wide range of bacteria
- Inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall
- Stable in the presence of gastric acid
- Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
- Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids
Dosage
- Adult dosage of 250 mg three times daily
- Adult dosage increasing up to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections
- Children dosage of 125 mg three times daily
- Severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection dosage of 3 gm every 12 hours
- Otitis media recommended dose of 1 g three times daily for adult
- Pneumonia recommended dose of 500-1000 mg three times daily
- Dental abscess recommended dose of 3 gm, repeated after 10-12 hours
- Urinary tract infections recommended dose of 3 gm, repeated after 10-12 hours
- Gonorrhoea single dose of 2-3 gm with Probenecid 1 gm
- Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
Administration
- Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding to milk, fruit juice, or water
- Preparations should be taken immediately after mixing
Interaction
- Concurrent use of Mox and Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of Amoxicillin
- Mox may affect gut flora leading to lower estrogen reabsorption
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects
- Possible side effects include diarrhea, indigestion, and occasionally rash
- Rare reports of Pseudo-membranous colitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category B
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk, caution in lactating mothers

- Possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens

Reconstitution
- Intramuscular reconstitution: Add water for injection to Amoxicillin 500 mg injection vial
