Indications
- Ear, nose, and throat infections

Pharmacology
Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It inhibits cell wall biosynthesis and is stable in the presence of gastric acid.
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250mg three times daily, increasing to 500mg three times daily for severe infections
- Children dosage: 125mg three times daily, increasing to 250mg three times daily for severe infections
- Specific doses for severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhea
- Adjustment in renal impairment
Administration
Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding the required amount to milk, fruit juice, or water, which should then be consumed immediately.
Interaction
Concurrent use with Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels. It may also affect gut flora, leading to reduced efficacy of combined oral contraceptives.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients.
Side Effects
Mild and transient side effects include diarrhea, indigestion, and occasionally rash. Rare reports of pseudo-membranous colitis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
US FDA pregnancy category is B. Caution is advised during lactation as Amoxicillin is excreted in human milk.
Precautions & Warnings
Possibility of superinfections should be kept in mind, with appropriate therapy if superinfections occur.
