Description
- Broad spectrum penicillin
- Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Stable in the presence of gastric acid
- Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
- Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids
- May cause mild and transient side effects such as diarrhea, indigestion, and rash
- Indicated for various infections such as ear, nose, and throat infections, lower respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, genito-urinary tract infections, venereal disease, dental abscess, H. pylori infection, and duodenal ulcer disease
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250mg three times daily, increasing up to 500mg three times daily for severe infections
- Children dosage: 125mg three times daily, increasing up to 250mg three times daily for severe infections
- Recommended dosage for specific conditions such as severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhea
- Dosage adjustments may be necessary for renal impairment
Administration
- Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding to milk, fruit juice, or water
Interaction
- Concurrent use with Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of Moxacil
- May affect gut flora leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral estrogen/progesterone contraceptives
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side effects
- May include diarrhea, indigestion, rash, and rarely pseudo-membranous colitis
Pregnancy lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category B - use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk - caution should be exercised when administered to a lactating mother
Precautions warnings
- Possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be kept in mind
Reconstitution
- For intramuscular administration - add water for injection to the injection vial
- For intravenous administration - dissolve in water for injection

- Keep in a dry place away from light and heat
- Keep out of the reach of children
